This client was a dream to work with.  She had been living in her home for two years, and many of the walls were bare. We met with the client in her home, took a tour, and discussed her personal taste, style, and interests. We noted that her home was a sophisticated combination of sleek contemporary style, and natural textures and colors. She very much wanted the artwork to work seamlessly with the overall feel of her home, so we focused on artwork that brought in natural colors, natural subject matter, and texture.

Around twenty artists were considered for two walls, we narrowed it down to an acrylic on canvas by Austin area artist Mars Woodhill and a photograph on paper by Austin artist Leon Alesi.

“Mars Woodhill’s kaleidoscopic whorls and eddies of paint bring to mind naturally occurring geological forms – semi-precious stones, geodes, or mineral deposits… Part of the visual interest lies in her working process, one that is fascinatingly legible on the surface of her paintings.
–Ian Alteveer Assistant Curator, Modern and Contemporary Art The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

We looked at several of Woodhill’s pieces, and this one stood out. The warm tones of the piece worked well with the warm wood that flows throughout the home. The dark, organic shapes echo the pattern of the countertops so that the piece feels cohesive with the space around it.

A photograph from the Residual Evidence series by Alesi was selected for the guest bedroom. These photographs are landscapes flipped, mirrored, and reoriented. The final images expose the fortitude, strength, and beauty of primordial earth. Several photographs were considered, with this being the final selection. Our client loved the drama within the photo where land meets sky. The blue and lavender tones work seamlessly with the finishes and accents in the room to create a beautiful, restful, and inspiring space.

At SKM Art Advising, we truly love art, and believe that art has the power to elevate a person’s experience of their space.  We will be working with this client on an ongoing basis, so check back for further acquisitions!
